Family Forums are held on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month, and are intended to be a time of education, constructive dialogue, and support. Occasionally, topics of particular interest may also be discussed during a lunch hour forum or another weekday evening.
Self-Care & Caregiver Resilience at the Holidays
Anyone who has ever read a blog or Facebook post written by a foster or adoptive parent knows: parenting burnout is real. It happens to the best of us, regardless of whether we’re foster, adoptive, or biological parents. Parenting is hard. And parenting children and teens who have experienced trauma and loss takes “hard” to a whole new level. Throw in the holidays with new people, lots of activities, a different schedule, and lots of unspoken expectations, and wow, does that “whole new level of hard” take on a new meaning!
What can we do when we as parents feel like we’re stuck in that “burned out, can’t deal with anything, overwhelmed, this is too hard” stage — but we need to also get ourselves out of that mindset and focus on the holidays? With gifts to wrap and friends to visit and big meals to cook, we may feel like being in the “hard stage” is a “luxury” we don’t have time for!
During this family forum, we’ll explore ways that we can develop stronger caregiver resilience. The more resilient we become as parents, the more we’re able to approach parenting kids from hard places from a position of strength and confidence.
