Family Forums are held on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month, and are intended to be a time of education, constructive dialogue, and support. Occasionally, topics of particular interest may also be discussed during a lunch hour forum.
Cultivating a strong attachment is critical for adoptive families. The disrupted attachment that adopted children have experienced literally re-wires the brain…which means that forming healthy attachment patterns with an adoptive family also requires re-wiring the brain. But how do you do that while also implementing and teaching about boundaries? And what happens when boundaries aren’t respected: do you opt for maintaining the attachment, or adhering to the boundary? Does it have to be either/or?
This first forum of the month will explore the interplay of attachment and boundaries. From here, we’ll discuss parenting strategies for the anxious child — and by anxious, we don’t mean nervous. We mean entirely insecure and fearful. We’ll close out the month with an examination of how families can get back on track and return to a state of calm after a chaotic trauma-induced behavioral event.
All Recommended families will receive an email inviting them to register for upcoming Forums. If you are Recommended and have not received an email invitation, please contact us at iap@fireflyIN.org. If you are not Recommended with Indiana Adoption Program, but have recently adopted or are in the process of finalizing an adoption and would like to participate, please email your request to your local adoption consultant.
