Understanding & Preventing Blocked Care

September 7 at 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm EDT

Family Forums are held on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month, and are intended to be a time of education, constructive dialogue, and support. Occasionally, topics of particular interest may also be discussed during a lunch hour forum.

Understanding & Preventing Blocked Care

If you’ve parented a highly adversarial child for a while, you may have experienced (or be experiencing) what’s called “blocked care.” Basically, going through the motions of parenting, but without feeling the joy, compassion, or reward you may have felt previously.

This isn’t something many parents talk about – they might be ashamed of not feeling more connected to their child, or confused as to why they can’t just summon up the emotional resources. And once parents find themselves in this position of feeling completely depleted, they often don’t know how to address it.

During this Forum, we’ll talk about managing caregiver burnout before you get to the point of blocked care; signs of potential blocked care; and ways to counter it. It’s an important conversation that you won’t want to miss.

All Recommended families will receive an email inviting them to register for upcoming Forums. If you are Recommended and have not received an email invitation, please contact us at iap@fireflyIN.org. If you are not Recommended with Indiana Adoption Program, but have recently adopted or are in the process of finalizing an adoption and would like to participate, please email your request to your local adoption consultant.
